Bountiful, Utah youth soccer coach suspected of sex crimes

Law enforcement took a 41-year-old Bountiful, Utah man into custody on suspicion of sex offenses involving a minor. Authorities booked the man into the Davis County Jail Wednesday as police continue to investigate allegations that the man had a sexual relationship with a girl he had coached in soccer. Authorities say that the girl, who is now 17-years-old, met the soccer coach in 2007. Police believe that the coach and the girl became friends over time. But authorities suspect that the relationship grew into one involving touching at first, and later developed into an unlawful sexual relationship, which they say lasted until 2011.

Law enforcement says that officers intended to question the man, but say that he exercised his right to remain silent and also asserted his right to have an attorney present during any potential questioning.

Generally, our system of constitutional justice guarantees important rights to individuals to keep the government from using its power to unfairly obtain alleged confessions. Constitutional guarantees include the idea that a person cannot be compelled to incriminate himself or herself. Similarly, a person can request that a criminal defense lawyer is present during questioning related to a criminal investigation. However, many people may not understand that speaking with law enforcement may be deemed as a waiver of important rights.

In the recent Bountiful, Utah situation, law enforcement claims that the young girl told a relative that she and the coach had had the alleged relationship. Authorities claim that as the girl grew older, she began to develop interest in boys of her own age, leading to the alleged disclosure of her prior relationship. The relative reportedly contacted police about the allegations.

Police claim that after the relationship between the man and the girl became intimate, the two were together frequently at the man’s Bountiful home. Authorities believe that sex offenses began to occur on a nearly daily basis, according to Deseret News.

Authorities reportedly suspect the man of a series of sex crimes, including sexual abuse, rape of a child, sexual abuse of a child, sodomy on a child, rape and forcible sodomy.
