Perhaps one of the most controversial cases to date is the shooting of Miami, Florida, teen Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman. Trayvon Martin was visiting his father in Central Florida in February 2012. As he was walking from the gas station he noticed a man following him. The man, Zimmerman, thought Martin was a possible burglar. After explicit instructions from the police telling him not to follow Martin, Zimmerman decided to tail him on foot. According to Zimmerman, Martin snuck up behind him and attacked him, somehow wrestling Zimmerman to the floor and sitting on his chest striking him. Zimmerman then pulled out his gun and shot Martin, killing him.

Despite no bruises or blood on Zimmerman from being struck, he argued he killed Martin in self-defense, saying Martin was bigger and stronger than he was. However, Zimmerman was trained in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), a fighting style which utilizes many disciplines including judo and jiu-jitsu, enabling you to neutralize a bigger opponent even from a disadvantageous position. Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder due to self-defense.
